Sherlockian thoughts... [Dec. 29th, 2009|10:37 am]

moviebuffs

[ron_o_rama]
The movie tried so hard to recreate Sherlock that the only thing the characters in the movie shared were names and a Baker Street address.

Without traditional characteristics as described in the books, the characters could have been named anything else and it would have been just as good, the marketing just would have been a bit harder, and it would have been harder to create a "franchise."

The performances were good, it was an enjoyable film. It just felt more like a turn of the century detective tale than an actual Sherlock Holmes movie. It could have been called "Will and Jack from "Will and Grace" solve mysteries at the Turn of the Century."

I much prefer "Young Sherlock Holmes" -- the 1985 Barry Levinson film detailing how Sherlock and Watson meet. And save a girl from being sacrificed by a secret society. Hey, that sounds familiar. That was an issue, for me, too: Two Sherlock theatrical releases in 25 years and they share this major plot point.

Anyway, it's worth spending the money, especially if you go in not knowing much.

Fun bar in Times Square [Dec. 29th, 2009|10:02 am]

[mood |incompetent]

I'm usually better at tracking places down via yelp or whereever, but everything cool seems very expensive.

Anyone have any recommendations for a fun bar or lounge or something in the theater district? (Really between ~52nd street and Penn Station)

Meeting a couple of friends, and I'm not sure they're gonna be keen on spending ~15 on specialty Martinis, which seems to be the trend around there.

the Living Room at the W hotel seems cool but expensive, there's a Russian Vodka room that seems expensive also.  I've been to Divine Bar, which I liked, but again, expensive.  Ayza too.

Mars2112 seems a little cheesy, but I think a little of that comes with the territory.

thanks.

I'm helping my mom clean up her place and she has tons of canned food (soups, salmon etc) she will never use. It's not even expired, far from it! I don't want to throw it away, anyone know of a place/places that are accepting donations? She's on Staten Island. Thanks!

Tyra Ditches Her Talkshow For... [Dec. 28th, 2009|09:59 am]

Tyra says au revoir to her talk show to pursue her new passion...film production.

"My next huge steps will allow me to reach more women and young girls to help us all feel as fierce as we truly are," Tyra said.

So, how about a game? What do you think the name of Tyra's first film will be? I'm gonna guess "Kiss My Fat Ass!" about a full-figured girl who overcomes stereotyping and humiliation (even though the actress will be a size 8) to become a supermodel. Cause like, that's so real y'all!

Its not like the world needs another review of Avatar (so I will be brief) - I saw it today and was amazed at how much I loved it. I was expecting to be dazzled by the shiny new visuals but they were not only better than I had anticipated (even with trailers) but I was surprised by how much I remained engaged with the plot too - and Sigourney Weaver is amazing - its great to see her back in the sci-fi saddle.
Once every few years a film comes along that raises the bar of how films are shot. (regardless of whether you like the plot, characterisations, etc.) The Matrix was probably the last film to do this for me, but Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Toy Story and Star Wars have all had their turns. Avatar now joins that list for me - expect a slew of pale imitations to follow.

Considering Adopting a Cat? [Dec. 28th, 2009|09:48 am]

newyorkers

[ode_to_noone]
Didn't get that kitty you asked for on Xmas? Please consider adopting Oliver! He's a bit over 1 year old, black and white, is ever so slightly cross-eyed (which is awesome) and ridiculously handsome. He's really playful, loves to be held, is very talkative and is always exploring.

He was brought into the animal hospital where my mom works and his owners claimed he was "mean" and wanted him put to sleep. My mom thought that was extremely unnecessary and decided to take him home and foster him. He's currently hanging out in my garage (occasionally sneaking into the house) because we already have a male cat, Scooter, who absolutely hates Oliver and is the reason why we can't adopt him. Oliver gets along GREAT with my dog and my other cat.

As for him being "mean," well, he isn't. He occasionally gets very excited and bites (which doesn't hurt) and then sometimes hisses. Anyone who has owned a cat knows this is just how some cats are. (I was just at a friends house last night and her cat did the same thing!) He isn't out to hurt anyone. He's just a playful cat who gets a little worked up sometimes. He just needs understanding owners who are willing to work with him...

If you are interested in adopting him, or know someone who might be, please message me or email me at gona87@aol.com! He is neutered, has all his shots, is FIV/FeLV negative and is in perfect health. He is currently indoor/outdoor but it shouldn't be difficult making him a completely indoor cat. He is currently in the Huntington area of Long Island but will travel for the right person/people :)

Thoughts on Fight Club: The Movie [Dec. 28th, 2009|05:36 pm]

moviebuffs

[zero_cinema]

I had a bad experience from reading Bret Easton Ellis's masterpiece, American Psycho, and then watching the film - which isn't very good, apart from Christian Bale's force-of-nature performance, that is. I think Fight Club is a much better film than American Psycho, and it does stay faithful to the book. But, the book doesn't have a particular strong narrative, and therefore doesn't translate particularly well onto film.

The book is really about style, mood and tone, rather than plot, story and resolution - which I think are three elements which films can't always do without. What does make Fight Club a good film, rather than an average one, is the casting - which is exceptional, perhaps the best I've seen. Brad Pitt is Tyler Durden, Ed Norton is the narrator, Helena Bonham Carter is Marla Singer and Meatloaf is Robert Poulson. These actors really inhabit the roles and capture the zeitgeist of the characters.

The other thing that saves Fight Club from mediocrity is, unsurprisingly, Fincher's direction. It's all very pop culture, post modern, breaking the fourth wall, that kind of thing. This approach could have become really annoying, but it wasn't. Fincher is definitely one of the few great American directors of this era, in my opinion (behind Gus Van Sant and perhaps, Michael Mann). Final thoughts, there was really no way to translate the ending from the book onto film, that's why the ending of the film sucked, but it was entirely unavoidable. I'm sure plenty of people loved the ending, just didn't work for me. Also, I wonder if they trying to be ironic by having a tonne of product placement in a movie based on a book that is so blatantly against consumer capitalism.

Anyway, what are you thoughts on the movie version of Fight Club, did you like it, are you a fan?

Anybody want a cat? [Dec. 27th, 2009|06:18 pm]

newyorkers

[conuly]
My sister's boyfriend picked up a stray cat. Somebody cut off his whiskers, poor thing. Who would do that to a sweet little kitty??? (A very sweet cat - you can even rub his tummy and he doesn't seem to mind! Who would have cut off the whiskers of such a trusting darling? Why would anybody do such a thing?)

Anyway, we can't keep a cat at the moment, too many people with allergies in the house. This little guy is an unneutered male. Judging from his size and his general behavior, I put his age at somewhere around a year, probably just under. He appears to be healthy, and I don't see any obvious signs of fleas. He's very sweet and friendly - actually, that's my only caveat about people wanting him. By the way he acts, it seems he's very much in need of attention. This might mellow down in time, at the moment he's a bit high-needs. If you're working 20 hours shifts, he might not be the cat for you.

We're on the North Shore of Staten Island, no car. Anybody who can come by here is welcome to get the kitty, or we can trek him into Manhattan or maybe a stop or two into Brooklyn on the train. I don't know how he'd be with another cat in the home, but my guess is he's young enough to adapt.

We don't think this is a neighbor's cat, I know most of the cats with people and I'm going to check with my two crazy-cat-lady neighbors (I'm the third, currently catless though I am, so I can call them that :P) because they're bound to know the remaining ones if they're outdoor cats. (Or indoor cats. One of them hands out coupons for reduced-cost neutering if she knows you have an unfixed kitty.)

Living in NY. How to spend money wisely. [Dec. 27th, 2009|03:22 pm]

newyorkers

[kate_fascinate]
My biggest New Years Resolution is to be wiser with my dosh, so I'm looking at my finances where I know money can be saved or better used.

1) Time Warner versus Optimum. I want cable for tv, the computer and a land line. Which is the best value? TWC bills me a ridiculous amount of money each month and I can't believe there's not a cheaper way. I was also thinking of getting Netflix to my TV and getting rid of HBO, etc., but I hear since it's somewhat new they don't have a lot of movies...

2) Just my 2 cents. Anyone who hasn't joined Groupon and Living Social Deals... get on it!

3) Any deals whether food/drink/fashion/exhibits in NYC you know of that helps you enjoy this city a little cheaper?

4) What's the best cell phone service in your opinion?

5) Fresh Direct vs. Food Emporium vs. ???

Subway door closing on passengers [Dec. 27th, 2009|07:49 am]

newyorkers

[moogiemoo]
I was on the J train yesterday afternoon and the doors attempted to close on me. I wss trapped breifly but my daughter and her friend grabbed the doors and held them so I could exit. I am not a New Yorker but know that one must hustle on and off the train and I was close behind my daughter. After I exited, they left go and the doors slammed shut. It was not a fun experience. And earlier, when we got on this train my daughters friend had nearly the same experience with the door closing on her. Somehow I thought that the train doors had some sort of safety device to stop this from happening similar to an elevator. Guess I was wrong.

Has this ever happened to you? Comments?

Event stickers [Dec. 26th, 2009|11:07 pm]

ottawa

[upward_walk]
Does anyone know if there's a store in Ottawa that sells event stickers for agendas/organizers? They're the sticker reminders for exams, doctors appts, birthdays, etc - a great example is this: http://www.calendars.com/Moms-Organizers/Calendar-Companions-Everyday-Planning-Stickers/prod122465/?categoryId=cat00153

I found some on ebay, but the shipping is expensive (three times the price of the stickers!) so I'd rather try to find them in a store. I am willing to travel anywhere in the city to get them.

Thanks, and I wish you all happy holidays!!!

ETA: If anyone also knows where in Ottawa Stabilo markers are sold, I'd very much appreciate it!

Getting info on car vandalism incident? [Dec. 26th, 2009|12:35 pm]

[mood | scared]

In the early nighttime hours of Christmas, my block had two cars burnt (without people in them, thank goodness.) My roommates and I are afraid it was a random act, therefore we're afraid to start our cars since they too may have been tampered with.

Can we call our local precinct to take a look beneath and in our cars to make sure there wasn't any fiddling done with the ignition, etc.?

How should I address the situation to the officer on the other side of the phone line to get what I want?

Best of the Decade, Netflix Edition [Dec. 25th, 2009|09:19 pm]

[erdbeermund]
[mood |self-indulgent]

I recently made that list of the movies I thought of as the best of the decade, as you may have noticed.
The list ended up being around 150 movies.

These are the ones available for instant viewing on Netflix, fyi.

This is totally an exercise in self-indulgence but people are always asking if there are any good movies on Netflix instant viewing... The list of 45 movies is below the cut. )
